Power Networkers – What other tips would you add to this list?
Using an ERG (or Affinity Group) to take the Pressure out of Networking:
Building a network can be daunting for people who need it most. If you’re naturally shy, early in your career, or trying to make inroads within a new specialty, building relationships with those who have more experience and expertise can be a huge career accelerator. One of the biggest benefits of being an Employee Resource Group (ERG) leader is having a built-in excuse to network!
Networking gives you the opportunity to learn and get others to help support you on your journey. It also provides the person you’re speaking to with an opportunity to get to know you better. As an ERG leader, you have a business imperative to get to know people across business lines to best serve your community. Create new contacts across leadership levels by setting up 30 minute, casual meetings and have something to say.
During your 1×1, ask what they do, how they got there, and what it takes to move up in their organization. Think through a few things you would like to share about yourself that will help the other person know you better. Importantly, plan to ask questions which that person, specifically, can answer with unique insight to help you grow (a quick LinkedIn search can help generate relevant questions).
Use your ERG affiliation to set yourself up for career and network success!
